The genus Dendrochilum belongs to the Coelogyne-tribe and is closely related to the genus Pholidota. 81 species of the 263 and 87 taxa can be found on Borneo. This means that after the Philippines, Borneo is the richest region where Dendrochilum-species grow. The Kinabalu mountain is the home for 32 Dendrochilum-species. From those 32, 12 species and 2 varieties are endemic on the Kinabalu. The mountains in eastern Sarawak are the most important habitat for this species on the island Borneo.
The first 12 pages are general information about the book itself (content, list of illustrations, list of tables, list of distribution maps, a list of new taxa, new combinations and taxa with a new status, a list with synonyms.
The introduction discusses the history of the genus Dendrochilum and morphological aspects of this genus. Detailed pen-drawings of leaf-tips, lips and columns illustrate this. A sub-chapter on anatomy is illustrated with pictures taken from a microscope of testae (seed skin) from different species. The cytology of the genus Dendrochilum hasn’t been studied very much, idem ditto for the formulae of the aromatic substances. Phylogenetic, biological and ecological aspects and the bio-geographical situation of this genus are important items.
All on Borneo growing Dendrochilum-species are discussed in a large chapter on taxonomy (p. 55 to p. 284). A key to the subgenera Acoridium, Dendrochilum, Platyclinis is given and for each subgenus a key to the sections in this subgenus and, where necessary, a key to the species in a section.
For each species we read: a reference to the first description and where relevant herbarium material can be found, a complete and detailed description, the distribution on Borneo and useful information for culture, some worth to know information and the etymology. The description is illustrated by a (size of 1 page) detailed pen-drawing. Colour pictures are published all over.
A short chapter discusses some hybrids that ware found on the Kinabalu mountain, the not well known taxon Dendrochilum trilobum (Ridl.) Ames and some excluded taxa.
The authors thanks a lot of co-operators, gives an extensive bibliography, a source-list of good photographs of Dendrochilum-species from Borneo, a list of numbered collection from Borneo and a list with herbaria with numbered collections from Borneo.
At the end of the book we find 90 colour-pictures and 2 indexes (plant-names and author-names).

This book is very interesting, a ‘must have’ for Dendrochilum-fanatics. It will complete the Dendrochilum-content of a library with books as ‘The Orchids of Sumatra’, ‘Orchidiana Philippiniana’, ‘The Orchids of Java’, 'Orchids of the Philippines' , …

The Orchids of Sumatra’, ‘Orchidiana Philippiniana’, ‘The Orchids of Java’, 'Orchids of the Philippines' , …
