L.C. Menezes is bij lezers van onder andere ‘The Orchid Digest Magasine’ bekend voor haar inhoudelijk sterke bijdragen over Braziliaanse orchideeën en de laatste jaren heeft ze regelmatig nieuw ontdekte soorten beschreven.
In het boek dat we hier voorstellen behandelt ze slechts één soort namelijk Cattleya warneri T. Moore. Samen met D.I. Duveen en Dr. J.A. Fowlie zaliger en Dr. G.J. Braem bespreekt ze deze attractieve Cattleya-soort ten gronde. Er is een historisch overzicht van deze mooie Cattleya en we lezen bijdragen over Robert Warner, naar wie deze soort en over William Cattley naar wie het geslacht Cattleya genoemd werd. De geografische verspreiding van Cattleya warneri T. Moore wordt grondig besproken en over het identificatieprobleem van deze Cattleya, vooral, en Cattleya labiata Lindl. wordt zeer grondig geredeneerd en geargumenteerd. Cattleya warneri T. Moore en Cattleya labiata Lindl. zijn namelijk extreem nauw met elkander verwant, ze worden wel eens de tweelingzusjes genoemd. In deze argumentatie is het onder andere interessant te leren dat het al of niet twee bloemspatten hebben in geen enkel geval een criterium is dat kan gebruikt worden om de soorten van elkaar te onderscheiden. Beide soorten maken terzelfder tijd bulben met een en met twee bloemspatten.
Ook het korte hoofdstuk dat de belangrijkste literatuur behandelt waarin Cattleya warneri T. Moore aan bod komt is nuttig. Samen met haar medewerkers bediscussieert L.C. Menezes waarom ze sommige benamingen van variëteiten aanvaardt of niet aanvaardt, alle aanvaarde variëteiten worden grondig besproken. Van elke variëteit is er een kleurfoto ter illustratie.
Het habitat van Cattleya warneri T. Moore wordt uitgebreid besproken en daaropvolgend publiceert de schrijfster een lange lijst van orchideeën die in de natuur samen met Cattleya warneri T. Moore voorkomen.
Uiteraard mocht aan dit boek geen uitgebreide cultuurnota ontbreken. L.C. Menezes beschrijft hoe je deze Cattleya het beste kweekt en wat de meest voorkomende ziekten en plagen zijn. Het is in deze wel belangrijk dat de lezer van het noordelijk halfrond de cultuurnota’s voor gebruik in het noorden overzet.
Er mag zonder overdrijving beweerd worden dat dit boek de Cattleya warneri T. Moore volledig behandelt en in elk hoofdstuk zijn er kleurfoto’s of reproducties van antieke prenten ter verduidelijking, in het totaal meer dan zeventig. Voor de Cattleya-liefhebber, die over deze soort meer wil te weten komen dan wat cutluurbe-schrijvingen, is dit zeker een zeer interessant boek.

Readers of ‘The Orchid Digest Magasine’ know L.C. Menezes as an author of articles with a ‘strong’ content. She wrote and writes about Brazilian orchid and the last years she also described some new Orchid species.
This book is dedicated to only one species: Cattleya warneri T. Moore. With the late D.I. Duveen, the late J.A. Fowlie and Dr. G.J. Braem she informs us about this attractive Cattleya species. We learn about the history of this Cattleya and information about Robert Warner is given to whom this species is named and about William Cattley to whom the genus Cattleya has been named. We read about the geographical distribution of Cattleya warneri T. Moore and about identification problems of this Cattleya in particular and of Cattleya labiata Lindl. With profound discussion and argumentation. Cattleya warneri T. Moore and C. labiata Lindl. Are very close relatives, some call them the twin sisters. In this argumentation we learn that having two or not having two flower sheaths is in no way a useful point for determination. Both species make pseudobulbs with one or two sheaths.
The short chapter about the literature in wich Cattleya warneri T. Moore is treated is useful. With her cooperators, L.C. Menezes explains why she does or does not accept names of varieties and all accepted varieties are profoundly discussed. From each variety a color picture is printed.
The habitat of Cattleya warneri T. Moore is largely discussed and thereafter the author publishes a list with all orchids living together with this Cattleya species.
L.C. Menezes explains how one should grow this Cattleya, what the most frequent pests and diseases are. It is important that readers, living on the northern hemisphere of the earth, ‘translate’ this culture advises into their northern conditions.
Without exaggeration one may say that this book is a complete treatment of Cattleya warneri T. Moore. Color pictures or reprints of antique plates are published for explanation in each chapter. The Cattleya fanatics who want to learn more about this species than only cultural advise will appreciate this book very much.
