What is an Orchid’ (p. 9).
De Index Part I verwijst naar een eerste hoofdstuk ‘Wales: its Landscape and Orchid Habitats’ (p.10 – 25) met informatie over de Wales en de daar in het wild voor komende orchideeën: Habitats, Orchid conservation in Wales (over habitat en het in stand houden), Orchid science in Wales (over wetenschap i.v.m. orchideeën in Wales), Distribution of wild orchids in Wales (over de verspreiding van wilde orchideeën in Wales), Safety in the countryside (gaat over kledij, ontmoetingen of confrontaties met dieren zoals wespen, teken, adders, …).
Index Part II, ‘Guide to the Orchid’ species is grafisch zeer interessant.
Part IV, ’Information Resources and Reference Material’ (p. 174 – 192), behandelt de items ‘Orchid taxonomy and naming’ (p. 175 – 178), ‘Orchid Biology’ (p. 179 – 182), ‘Photographing wild orchids’ (183 -185).

Wales is a country within Great Britain with a surface of 20,779 km2.  There live a bit more than 3.000.000 welsh people. Wales has more than 2.700 km coastline and some interesting mountain sceneries.
This book begins with an index (p. 3) referring to a preface (p. 7) and an explanation about orchids: What is an Orchid (p. 9).
The Index Part I refers to the first chapter with information on Wales and the wild orchids: ‘Wales: its Landscape and Orchid habitats’ (p.10 - 25): Habitats, Orchid conservation in Wales; Orchid science Wales; Distribution of wild orchids in Wales Safety in the countryside (about clothing, meetings or encounters with animals such as wasps, ticks, snakes, ...).
Index Part II, ‘Guide to the Orchid species’ (p. 26 - 103) is graphically very interesting. We see a table with for each species a small photo with flowers at about real size, the scientific, the English and Welsh name as well as the page number on which we find the description and illustrations of the species.
From p. 30 on, the author discusses each orchid species found in Wales: 2 pages for each species. We read identification data, potential confusion with other species, something about the distribution, the habitat in which the species grows, the flowering period. Each species is illustrated with for identification useful, beautiful, here and there very beautiful habitat and flower pictures.
In Part III, 'Orchid Sites and Walks’ (p 104 -. 173), the author gives tips where in Wales we can see flowering orchids.
Part IV 'Information Resources and Reference Materials’ (p 174 -. 192), treats the items ‘Orchid taxonomy and naming' (p 175 -. 178), ‘Orchid Biology’ (p 179 -. 182), ‘Photographing wild orchid (183 - 185). The ‘Glossary’ (page 186 -. 189) is a graphically interesting list with in orchids literature frequently used terminology. That will certainly be very useful for the layman. ‘Other sources of information’ (p 189 -. 190) lists four titles of books, a number of relevant website addresses and contact information of organizations.
A general index with references to items other than orchids names closes the book.

Conclusion.
This is a beautifully produced book about the wild orchids in Wales. Not the size, A5, but the 'hard cover' makes it unsuitable for the use as 'field guide'. This book is to beautiful for this use/practice. It will be more a help, when back home or in the hotel, to give a name at the orchid flowers seen or photographed in nature. For those who know little or nothing about orchids, let alone that he/she already knows what orchids are, this book is an interesting and useful acquaintance. For with orchids more experienced people this booklet will certainly be a good first aid in the identification of an orchid species observed in flower. Additionally to that first aid a real orchid flora will certainly be useful.
