After some acknowledgements and a table of contents a chapter ‘General’ presents the genus Paphinia (p. 9-17). The text is attractive and illustrated with many historically important photos of texts, people and plates.
A chapter “Morphology” discusses the morphology of the Paphinia-flowers in detail (p. 18-26). The beautiful and clear color photos and a clear table with parts of the flowers play a very important role here.
The “Checklist” provides an overview of the Paphinia-species with the accepted names printed in a bold font, the synonym names in a regular one (p. 27-28).
In “Distribution” the author indicates for each species where it grows at which heights above sea level (p. 28-30).
“Habitat” shows, richly illustrated, the biotopes in which the Paphinia-species live (p. 30-37).
From p. 38 on each of the 16 species and varieties is presented and discussed. The author provides, where necessary, a historical overview per species. A reproduction of the original description has been printed for each species. The distribution is noted followed by interesting information, either or not extensive. All of this is richly illustrated with drawings and usually very beautiful, sometimes full-page photos and reproductions of antique illustrations.
In “Pollination Biology” (by Heiko Hentrich) we learn, well illustrated with beautiful photos, about the pollinating insects and the pollination mechanisms of the Paphinia-species (pp. 198-213). The sub-chapter “Floral Scent” shows, among other things, the chemical composition of the alluring fragrances.
A nicely illustrated chapter about Paphinia-hybrids follows on pages p. 214-222.
“Etymology”, a selection of interesting literature and a name index (people and plants) close this book.
Conclusion.
This richly illustrated book is really beautiful: a coffee table book. It is and a reference book and an informative book and a book that can be an important help to identify Paphinia-species.

Na een kort dankwoord een en inhoudstabel stelt de auteur onder de titel ‘General’ het geslacht Paphinia voor in woord en beeld (p. 9-17). De tekst is boeiend en is geïllustreerd met veel historisch belangrijke foto’s van teksten, personen en prenten.
Een hoofdstuk ‘Morphology’ bespreekt in detail de morfologie van de Paphinia-bloemen (p. 18-26). De mooie en duidelijke kleurenfoto’s en een overzichtelijke tabel met onderdelen van de bloemen spelen hier een zeer belangrijke rol.
De ‘Checklist’ geeft een overzicht van de Paphinia-soorten waarbij de aanvaarde soorten vetjes gedrukt zijn, de synoniemnamen niet vetjes (p. 27-28).
In ‘Distribution’ geeft de auteur voor elke soort weer waar deze voorkomt én op welke hoogtes boven zeeniveau ze groeien (p. 28-30).
‘Habitat’ toont rijkelijk geïllustreerd de biotopen waarin de Paphinia-soorten leven (p. 30-37).
Vanaf p. 38 komt elke van de 16 soorten en variëteiten aan bod. De auteur geeft waar dat nodig is per soort een historisch overzicht. Per soort is een reproductie van de originele beschrijving afgedrukt. De verspreiding wordt genoteerd en er is al dan niet uitgebreide informatie. Dit alles is rijkelijk geïllustreerd met tekeningen én meestal zeer mooie, soms paginagrote foto’s én reproducties van antieke illustraties.
In ‘Pollination Biology’ (door Heiko Hentrich) maken we kennis, ook aan de hand van mooie foto’s, met de bestuivende insecten en met de bestuivingsmechanismen van de Paphinia-soorten (p. 198-213). In het subhoofdstukje ‘Floral Scent’ wordt o.a. de chemische samenstelling van de aanlokkende geurstoffen weergegeven.
Er volgt nog een mooi geïllustreerd hoofdstuk over Paphinia-hybriden (p. 214-222).
‘Etymology’, een selectie van interessante literatuur en een namenindex (personen en planten) sluiten dit boek af.
Conclusie.
Ik vind dit rijkelijk geïllustreerd boek echt prachtig. Het is én een kijkboek én een informatief boek én een boek dat een belangrijke hulp kan zijn om Paphinia-soorten te determineren.
