Since his appointment as head of the orchid collection of the Jardin du Luxembourg (Frensh Senat) in Paris, Pierre Bertaux developed an important interest in the genera Lycaste and Paphiopedilum. Paphiopedilum because the collection of this plants in the Luxembourg was known since a very long time. His already existing interest in the genus Lycaste became important also due to important stimulation from some of his friends. His interest for the genus Anguloa is evident because of the enormous possibility to create hybrids between plants of both genera.
This book shows us the interest and addiction of an amateur with the experience and knowledge of a professional. This book is the first orchid monograph in Frensh. This is especially for the Frensh speaking part of the world an important event.
The first chapter is an introduction to the genera Lycaste and Anguloa. We learn about the history of both genera and about the recently (by A. Ryan and H.F. Oakeley) from Lycaste separated genus Ida (the former Fimbriatae section of the genus Lycaste). The author gives attention to some important morphological features such as roots, flower spike, pseudobulbs, leaves and flowers.
In the second chapter we read about the natural habitats of the plants and their distribution. Beautiful pictures illustrate this all.
A third chapter gives culture advises, the importance of light, temperature, watering and feeding, pot mixtures, potting and re-potting, taking care of problem plants.
A short fourth chapter tells about pollinisation and hybridisation.
In the long fifth chapter (p. 63 to P. 153) Pierre Bertaux presents and describes us the Lycaste and Ida species in his collection which is recognised in France as National collection.
In a sixth chapter Pierre Bertaux writes about the Anguloa species in his collection.
A seventh chapter goes about the natural and artificial hybrids.
This book ends with a glossary, a list with names of botanists and the abbreviations of their names, a bibliography and a list of publications in Frensh, a list with the provenance of the plants figuring in this book and an alphabetic list pro genus of the described plants.
The pictures are mostly of very good quality, the drawings are artistic and useful.
As sis before, this is the first orchid monograph in Frensh and should only for that reason be advised to every Francophone Lycaste amateur, also because useful culture advise is give. The genus Anguloa is a surplus.
